AMERICAN INDIAN
On January 9, 2007, four Aboriginal sisters arrived from Taiwan to intern at the American Indian Community House and the Flying Eagle Woman Fund. This Taiwanese Internship Program was borne out of a conversation Ali El-Issa had with Walis Pelin, Minister of Council of Indigenous Peoples of Taiwan in January 2006 in Taipei. The idea was to promote a cultural exchange between the Aboriginal Taiwanese community and the North American Native peoples. The hope was that this internship program would help aspiring young Aboriginal Taiwanese get to know ways to help and service urban Indigenous population which are basically non-existing in Taiwan. The ladies arrived with boundless energy, ambition, and drive to learn and to lead for their peoples. They were: Lenglenman Ruvaniyao (Paiwan), a lecturer in nursing at Tzu-chi University and first-year doctoral student in anthroplogy at Ching-Hwa University, Sawmal Lasong (Amis), an M.A. student in Indigenous Studies at the only Indigenous College of Taiwan Sayun Simong (Atayal), a journalist at Aboriginal TV, Taiwan, Souniel Simung (Paiwan), holds a B.A. in Japanese and is on sabbatical (She is also the half sister of Lenglengman Ruvaniyao). The interns were also graciously hosted by Paul Haible at the Peace Development Fund in Amherst, MA, and by Professor Yi-Chun Tricia Lin , Director of the Women’s Studies Program at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, CT. We were sorry to see the interns leave and look forward to a return visit sometime in the future. We also like to thank everyone for being so kind and helpful to them during their internship.
